Define a Nonprofit

To me a nonprofit is something that has an amazing outcome.  Even though that is not the case every time, there always seems to be a nice story that comes with the success of a nonprofit.  What also comes to mind is NO MONEY... which is so frustrating because people in nonprofit organizations, work harder then most for-profit organizations.  Not only do the employees not make enough, the organization it self has to fight harder for money to make the nonprofit better and thriving.
I do not have much experience in the nonprofit world, however I am learning a lot at my internship which is one.  I have much more of an understanding of a nonprofit and because of that, definitely more positive.  Even though there are negative stories out there, I still have a lot of faith and hope to one day change a lot of lives in whichever nonprofit I end up at.

  1. Thanks for your post Ashley. I want to know more about what you mean by "amazing outcome" or "nice story"--I have some ideas--we think of nonprofits as doing "good work." But what does that mean to you? And what about the ideological differences in nonprofit orgs like the National Rifle Association vs. organizations that seek to limit access to guns? I'd love to hear specifically about what you're learning about nonprofits through your internship too.

  2. Hey Ashley,

I totally agree with the underpay in the nonprofit field. It does get frustrating which is why I am constantly reminding myself why I continue to do what I do. But the good stories such as brightening a youth's day after a long day at school, are the many intangible rewards that keep me going.
